‹ Oct. 26-27, 2010OREGON PROJECT
The Foundation is contributing to a strategy meeting on October 26-27 when the plans for the Oregon Women’s project will be presented to invited experts. The meeting will be followed by a series of public lectures.
The Foundation has obtained funds to complete the documentary film about the daily lives and diets of women in rural Oregon.
‹ SEPT. 17-21, 2010INTERNATIONAL MEETING
The Foundation has contributed to the initial costs of organising the 7th International Meeting on “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease”. The meeting will be held in Portland on September 17-21, 2011.
SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY ROLE
We continue to act as scientific adviser to projects in the USA, UK, France and the Middle East.

‹ April 6th and 7th 2009THIRD ANNUAL
NUTRITION IN THE WOMB COURSE
This was held in Seattle in order to extend the coverage of the course across the American Northwest. The March of Dimes collaborated in organising and hosting the course.
OREGON PROJECT
The Foundation has commissioned two research projects, carried out by the Oregon Research Institute.
- A series of focus group discussions with women within the WIC program. The aim was to ascertain the barriers to good food choices in less affluent families.
- A study of WIC practices in Oregon. In addition The Foundation obtained funds to make a documentary film about barriers to good food choices in Oregon.
SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY ROLE
The Foundation continued to play a role as scientific adviser to projects in the U.S., South America and the Middle East.

‹ March 14th 2008STAKEHOLDER’S MEETING
Following the success of the September NITW Course The Barker Foundation collaborated with the Oregon Chapter of the March of Dimes to hold a stakeholders meeting in Oregon. The purpose was to:
- Set out the evidence which justifies interventions to improve the diets of girls and young women, before and during pregnancy.
- Discuss how these interventions might be implemented.
The meeting was attended representatives from state legislature, non-profit organizations, the Oregon Institute and OHSU.
‹ April 2008SOUTH AMERICA
David and Jan Barker represented the Foundation at the inaugural meeting of the Danone Institute of the Southern Cone (Chile, Argentina and Uraguay) in Buenos Aires.
‹ July 2008FOOD CHOICE
The Foundation is funding The Food Choice Groups that are being run by Dr. Mary Barker, a psychologist in Southampton and Dr. Sarah Hampson her counterpart at the Oregon Institute in Eugene. The Foundation raised $4000 to support a satellite meeting run by Dr. Mary Barker entitled “Changing Nutrition Behaviour to Improve Maternal and Fetal Health” at the recent DOHaD meeting in Nottingham, UK.
THAILAND 2008
In collaboration with the University of Southampton the Foundation is funding the analysis of the data from the Thai Longitudinal Study. These data comprise detailed records of the growth and development of 5000 children born in five different areas of Thailand in 2000. The focus of the study is how their growth, nutrition and activities influence their cognitive development.

‹ Sept. 19th, 20th and 21st 2007FIRST NUTRITION IN THE WOMB COURSE
The Barker Foundation collaborated with The Heart Research Center at OHSU Portland Oregon to run the first Nutrition in the Womb course. It was designed to bring the science of nutrition in the womb and its implications for public health to public health profesionals and nutritional scientists. It was well attended. Funds were raised by The Foundation to pay the course fees for those whose organisations could not do so. It was followed by two free courses for teachers and school administrators.
